The Handbook of Simulation Games in Social Education, presents the “What”, the “Why”,and the “How” of Simulation Games.
• What are Simulation Games?
• Why use Simulation Games?
• How do I create and use Simulation Games?
When this book was first published in 1974. Ron Stadsklev was one of the few pioneers seeking to introduce Simulation Games as a new teaching technique. Now Simulation Games are in the mainstream and this expanded edition is even more salient than ever.
Role playing, games, and social simulations have been around for a long time. In order for the game process to be educational, it must reward participants who understand and interact within the social model effectively. The Model of Autelic Inquiry presented in this Handbook shows how all these elements are incorporated into a Simulation Game. The biggest challenge is developing an entertaining and playable game element without distorting the isomorphism of the social model.
This handbook includes several experiential learning techniques. These techniques can be implemented directly from the material contained within the handbook and do not require a computer. The collection of essays which comprise this handbook illustrate how these teaching techniques are used. This handbook also discusses how to avoid the many pitfalls of Simulation Game design.
For example
In “The T puzzle game”, participants will experience how frustration effects a person’s ability to accomplish difficult tasks and the emotional change that accompanies certain activities.
“The Land Use Simulation” is a social simulation, designed to demonstrate a process by which people can determine the best way to use their public land.
“The Constitution Today” is a simple simulation game, designed to motivate students to study the constitution in a meaningful and personal way. Students will also be using a parliamentary process called log rolling in order to achieve a high score. This simulation game was used in a comparative study of simulation gaming and lecture-discussion method to determine the amount of knowledge retained over time.
Handbook of Simulation Gaming in Social Education / Constitution Today eBook Ron Stadsklev
This book contains chapters written by the leading practitioners of the time it was first published in 1975. All give a wonderful sense of the time. Stadsklev also provides a useful framework for separating types of simulations and games. Something needed today given the way "games" has come to mean only video games for most people. All in all a must read for a serious exploration of games for education.Product details

Handbook of Simulation Gaming in Social Education / Constitution Today eBook Ron Stadsklev Reviews
This book hits the nail on the head in an exciting way to get children or adults to learn by making learning a fun process. Ron's detailed guide presents the plan to better teach a subject. I have suggested that a Mission Outreach organization I am familiar with look into Ron's methods to teach English As a Second Langauge in foreign countries. This is Dennis Neumann doing the review.
This book was long the standard bible for educators in using gaming to make inroads in students awareness of social issues. I'm so glad Ron and Matt finally made it available to the broader web aware market. Running just one simulation game in your classroom is guaranteed to be the most impactful event you ever do in your classroom, (legally that is -).
It is written in an easy conversational tone, and speaks to the "how to" of learning from game playing. Too many teachers think if they play any simulation game then learning automatically happens end of story. Not so! The huge majority of learning takes place after the gaming, in sharing, critiquing, and bringing to the awareness those lessons that were learned subliminally and emotionally. This manual shows you step by step how to facilitate that learning.

This book is the real thing! As an educator for the past 25+ years, I find this to be a treasure trove of practical, meaningful exercises that can be adapted and adopted for a variety of settings, ages, and course contents. And that's not all. Ron Stadsklev was obviously far ahead of his time in understanding the essential nature of situated and experiential learning and how to translate that into classrooms. I recommend this to anyone who facilitates learning!
This is a tremendous resource about what could become a major solution to upgrading
the modern educational system. Simulation gaming in education will emerge again for heated
discussion, and the author is uniquely qualified to open and continue the discussion. I hope the
author will follow-up with applications in for today and tomorrow in reinventing education.
