Solar II How to Design Build and Set Up Photovoltaic Components and Solar Electric Systems Phillip Hurley 9780983784739 Books

I give this book high marks because it is a very straightforward DIY approach to the details of installing a solar electric system -something hard to find.It should be on the list of anyone who has decided to set up a basic off-the-grid system , but it will be especially handy for anyone actually doing it themselves. Although Hurley goes through all the basics of handling electric components and aims at doing so on a budget, the reader would best be prepared if he/she has some familiarity and a minimum comfort level with the subject.I am a homeowner who has done basic AC wiring. This book gave me a much better backround in electric theory and handling DC. I take off a little for a couple editing mistakes which really can make a difference in a technical subject. However, they are minor and anyone reading with comprehension will not be mislead.
I don't plan to build each component myself ( for instance, I will buy a charge controller with more sophisticated features than these instructions cover), but I found the explanation for a simplified and cheaper approach useful in making that choice. As far as the more basic construction questions, Hurley sets the reader free to be creative, but again a certain can-do attitude is best when making your own plans. His general advise on managing and maintaining the system is excellent and he also gives very useful references for suppliers and further reading which are not yet too dated.

October, 2014 update. About $8,000 bucks later I have my system up and running. Needless to say I did not install the simple system described in this book. My education continued with much more reading in print and online. The components available now are light years ahead of stuff available even 10 years ago, and prices have kept coming down.
But none of this is to say I've changed my opinion of this book.I still find myself opening this for a look because the information, as far as it goes, is so quickly found in the simple way Hurley offers it.I will agree that this may not be simple enough for some people, and at the stage I was at when I first read this I did have to go over it more than once. Basic concepts have to be repeated to be firmly grasped, and to build confidence. I'm certainly not an expert yet, but I can follow most conversations in the subject of solar power readily, and make smart enough choices to make my system fit my needs.I give this book credit for starting me off.

Good information if you want to build his style of panels. Excellent resource information.
Meets minimum expectations for such a book. Good for beginners W/ basic understanding of electric/ electronics.
Good information but not what I expected
very easy to understand, from basic electricity to photons
You need both books- SOLAR II - and BUILD YOUR OWN SOLAR PANEL-to have all the info. you need. Hurleys two books are the best you will find for the do-it-yourselfer.
Has some good information, but overall the content is pretty weak. Almost no useful information about diodes. My impression was that the author's knowledge was pretty limited.
I am studying Solar Systems for residential and Charging purposes and Solar II How to Design, Build and Set Up Photovoltaic Components and Solar Electric Systems is packed with some of the best information I have come across for setting up and building your own PV Solar power system. I have read several of the early chapters and scanned the Index and feel this will offer both insight and knowledge I may be lacking. Each chapter, which is in large print, and contains all the visual descriptions of performing the building and plans I will need to set up my home Solar Power back-up system for the Utility Company's outages and may lead me to even selling some back to the company. Mostly, it is for outages from storms where we would otherwise be relying on candles for light and waiting for the refrigerator to warm up. I may even consider a system just for the AC. Planning now what that will require. I am not sure single phase 230VAC is reasonable or not, but I will know after reading this book. Upfront Solar is pricy, but then it starts to pay it's way, hopefully with little trouble or expense. I love this book.
